Interesting choice of graphics from Joomla:
Check this:

And then look at the striking similarity of the World Bank logo:

Could have come up with something more original.

Well thinking is not for this upcoming generation
It is sad but in older times, specifically in marketing and advertising, thinking was the first job you did on ANY job, be it thinking about a design, thinking about a concept...
Today but this habit seems to have been put completely aside. People just sit down at the computer and hack in anything that comes to there mind and pass it on as a "concept". Well. This is actually called brainstorming and brainstorming would definitively require cleaning up of thoughts and consolidating and re-evaluating.
But I do see the point in these youngsters: thinking requires energy, time, coffee, a cigarette maybe and might not always be such an easy thing to do.
I totally agree on the World Bank Logo. Here comes another effect of present day designers, marketers, advertising specialists: in my office there is a huge bookshelf full of books on design, marketing, typography, advertising AND a lot of off-topic matters such as cooking, foreign countries, photography, literature in various languages, some magazines worth keeping etc. The collection was accumulated over 25 years really and I actually have read every SINGLE book in my shelf. Younger people find this fascinating to even strange.
But then how should a no-brain quick-job never-read-anything just-watch-trash-TV only-eat-crap-food never-cook-anything-yourself always-react-dull-because-that's-so-kewl youngster actually KNOW that this icon is the World Bank's icon?!
I wouldn't even use it simply because to my knowledge, it appears somewhere else as a dingbat in one of those awful dingbat fonts, too, and let's face it: this "world" logo is so darn bad that even World Bank should think of an update...
I can only say: be curious CONSTANTLY and consume A LOT of books, read those - not only look at pictures, go OUT and open your eyes, learn to see the world like a photographer (there are good books on that also) and then you won't be tempted to do such s**t in the first place.
P.S.: At least the designer seemed to know about the importance of white-space ;-)
Please correct this ASAP.
If I were being naughty, I might lead with the last line of your blog. ;-)
Hey - I'm Amy Stephen. I'm a member of the Joomla! community and I help with the comm team and the bug squad. I'm also a big Drupal fan and have $175 tickets to DrupalCon DC.
I come in peace.
Here's where we got the world photo -> http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=4816076
You are right, it is remarkably similar, although there are important differences, maybe only a designer might notice. I suppose, though, that anyone could appreciate that a globe with main latitudinal and longitudinal lines is likely not rare in our increasingly smaller planet.
I ask that you please amend this accusation. Our designer gave freely of his time, and he is above all things, a professional. He is not someone who would ever consider stealing anything from anyone. The post is damning and the statements are damaging to the individual involved. Now that you understand the reality of the matter, it will be important to make corrections.
I hope to meet you if you are at DrupalCon DC.
Kind regards,
Amy :)
Sure
Amy,
thanks for the clarification. Your point is valid, and I corrected the text.
See you at DrupalCon.
Thanks!
Much appreciated! Look forward to seeing you in DC - just noticed you have *the* most popular topic. Hope I am able to slip in and learn.
Thanks again!
